Tier 4: Total Clusterfuck
How do you correct a report after leadership already saw the wrong numbers?
The short answer
Correct it in the same channel it went out, within the same business day, leading with the corrected figure and the size of the change. State what decisions might be affected. A data error you flag yourself is credibility; one that someone else finds is a competence review.
What's actually at stake
- 01Numbers get copied into decks within hours. Every hour of delay multiplies the cleanup.
- 02Leading with 'small correction' when it is a 40% swing destroys trust twice.
- 03Naming the affected decisions is what separates a professional from an embarrassed one.
Do
- ยท Restate the correct number first, in bold, in the same channel.
- ยท Quantify the delta and what caused it.
- ยท Say which decisions or documents need revisiting.
Don't
- ยท Do not quietly update the dashboard and say nothing.
- ยท Do not describe a material error as a rounding issue.
- ยท Do not correct it only to the person who asked.
A draft you can send now
Correction to Monday's numbers: Q3 signups were 4,120, not 6,480. The original pull double-counted trial conversions. That changes the growth rate from 31% to 12%, so anyone using the Monday figure in a plan โ the roadmap deck and the board one-pager โ needs the revised chart, attached. I've added a validation step to the pull so this can't repeat.
Tailor this to my exact disaster โQuestions people actually ask
- What if the wrong number made us look good?
- That is exactly the number you must correct fastest, in writing, with your name on it.
- Should I tell my manager first?
- Yes, ten minutes before the public correction, not ten hours.
