Tier 4: Total Clusterfuck

What do you do if someone saw a message you wrote about them?

The short answer

Go to them directly and fast, in person or on a call, not in text. Do not litigate context or claim it was taken out of context unless it demonstrably was. Say what you actually think, apologize for the way you said it, and accept that the relationship reset is theirs to set the pace on. Then assume anyone else in that channel saw it too.

What's actually at stake

  • 01Text apologies for text offenses feel like more of the same medium that caused it.
  • 02'Out of context' is heard as 'I stand by it but resent being caught'.
  • 03The other people in the channel are a second, quieter problem you also have to handle.

Do

  • · Talk live, same day.
  • · Own the words as written.
  • · Let them set the timeline for normal.

Don't

  • · Do not ask them not to tell anyone.
  • · Do not claim it was a joke unless it obviously was.
  • · Do not delete the message — that's evidence tampering optics.

A draft you can send now

I'd like ten minutes today, in person if you're around. I wrote something about you that you've seen, and I'm not going to pretend it was taken out of context. I want to own it directly rather than over Slack.

Questions people actually ask

Should I tell my manager?
If it involved a protected characteristic, harassment, or a client — yes, immediately, and involve HR.
What if I was factually right about their work?
Then say it to them properly. The channel was the offense.
Can I just apologize by DM?
You can start there to request the conversation. Don't end there.
