What do you do after ranting in the wrong Slack channel?

The short answer

Delete it only if nobody has replied; otherwise edit is worse than leaving it. Post one short line owning the tone, take the substance to the right forum, and DM anyone named. Do not argue the merits in the thread — the merits are not what people are watching.

What's actually at stake

  • 01The rant is usually right about the problem and wrong about the venue. Say exactly that.
  • 02Deleting after replies exist creates a screenshot economy.
  • 03A rant that turns into a concrete proposal ages surprisingly well.

Do

  • · Own the tone in one sentence without retracting the legitimate point.
  • · Move the real issue to the right channel with an actual proposal.
  • · DM anyone you named, individually.

Don't

  • · Do not silently delete a message people replied to.
  • · Do not defend the tone. Defend the point, if it's worth defending.
  • · Do not add a follow-up rant about how the first rant was misread.
